Welcome to RTM Notifier
Uncategorized September 30th, 2008
What is it?
RTM Notifier is a desktop program which sits in the background periodically checking your Remember the Milk tasks
What does it do?
- displays notifications periodically to inform you how many tasks are due

- allows you to configure how often you are notified
- allows you to turn off notifications for X minutes

- gives you quick access to all of RTM’s goodness without having to keep a browser window open all the time by right clicking on the apps systray icon
Thats it really, not earth shattering but I find it useful and hopefully you will too.
There’s lots more it I’d like to add but this started out just as a way to keep an eye on my tasks, so I thought I’d keep it basic and if people like it I’ll extend it later.
If your interested download it and see what you think
By the way, I dont have access to a mac so if anyone with a mac out there finds it doesnt work or is a bit quirky let me know in the comments
Update : 09 Oct
Thanks everyone for your feedback, its been really useful.
I’ve been very happy with the number of downloads so I will be putting as much time as I can spare into adding more functions to the app. First thing I’ll be looking at is a couple of minor issues which should be resolved in the next week or so.

Really like the interface. Impressive. And size is perfect for a high resolution monitor. The only function sorely missing is the ability to add a task directly from the AIR app. If you could tie it in and add nothing but the basic functionality to add a simple task (nothing too complex … just add a task of any kind), I’d find this near perfect for most everyone’s needs.

Thanks for the positive feed back. I’ve added an “add task” button to the app which will open up a window direct to your rtm tasks. I know this isn’t strictly speaking “in the app”, but it does have the advantages that
- you no longer need to keep a browser window open at RTM
- because its an air browser window, its much faster than IE or firefox opening up and should be less resource intensive because it won’t have any plugin’s or extras running
When I’ve got more feedback as to what people want I’ll certainly have a look at how to incorporate adding tasks more directly into the app.

Great job on the app, it looks fantastic, and thanks for making it! I’d love the ability to complete tasks directly in the RTM-Notifier window.

Doesn’t work on Ubuntu?
Installer failed for me.

I’ve really been looking for something like this for awhile. If you can add another view or pane or something where you can see all of your tasks, not just the ones due today, that would be awesome.
October 7th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
The air apps looks good. I am an OS X user so I just wanted to provide some feed back. I am not actually getting it to pull tasks I have had add a few but none will show up in the app. I would like to say that being able to create new tasks with due dates and being able to pick the list to put it on would be awesome.
Good job on it.

Sounds like exactly what I’m looking for, pity AIR doesn’t work on 64 bit linux systems.
October 7th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I got it! But I had to right-click.
October 7th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
I can’t see my tasks
Could you help me? I think you have a very great app here
October 7th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Don’t know if there’s something I missed but in the screen shot the header for tasks is “Tasks” but in my download it is “Tasks Due” so I just wanted to know if it was possible to get a better view of what tasks are soon due like in the screen shot of the article

Is this Open Source, can we help with the development? Couple things I’ve noticed, the app stays on top always, at least on Linux and doesn’t allow you to do anything else with other apps under it. Also, would love the ability to narrow down my view based on list. I have several list I share with several other people that I don’t always need to see.
Great start however. Let me know if source is available.

I agree that the interface is great. This app is very handy and is just what I was looking for! The only recommendation I have at this time is the ability to edit tasks, specifically postpone tasks straight from the application. Keep up the good work, I look forward to the development of this app.

I also noticed that RTM Notifier takes up a significant amount of memory usage. I would prefer a constantly-running application, such as RTM Notifier be lighter on memory usage.

great app!
but, when “Language” setting is not English on RTM, it seems not to work well.

Hi, great app. I think this has some serious potential to be an RTM staple. The internal task area is clean and simple. A few constructive feedback points if you don’t mind:
1. The initial animation upon opening seems to detract from the clean functionality of the app. It looks good and I’m sure you spent a lot of time making it look wicked awesome, but for people who use rtm heavily, it might be a detracting feature. Maybe make it an option.
2. I could easily see this as being something that could sit on the bottom right hand corner of my desktop consistently and not get minimized. As such, it would be nice to have the tabs on the left hand side or at least the option to switch sides.
3. On a less important aesthetic note, the upper area still looks a little beta. I respect the desire to retain rtm’s “back of the napkin” style branding, but I think it might look more cohesive if “rtm notifier” and the “x” were brought down to be part of the upper chrome. It would give it more of a solid, app-like feel.
The rest of the GUI is nice, very clean and consistent with the RTM brand.
Thanks for a great app! Look forward to the updates. I hope RTM takes notice of you and promotes this. Cheers.

Just letting you know that the RTM Notifier seems to be very broken in Ubuntu 8.04. I start the app and the whole screen goes black with the notifier sitting in one corner and I lose the rest of my desktop. Close the app and the black disappears and my desktop returns.

Good work. +1 for better task management
Moreover, can you make the app stick to the desktop “beneath” all the windows instead of on top of them? Maybe with a shortcut key to bring it to top..
Thanks

I have a small feature request. Would it be possible to add a list filter? I have a to-do list for things at home and another for work tasks. I’d rather not have my home tasks appear on my work computer and vice versa.
Thank you for making this app, means I can remove making something similar myself from my to-do list.

No way to make it work… Login is ok but doesn’t show any task
October 8th, 2008 at 1:47 am
EDIT
It works only if i setup my RTM account in english
Any poss to make it work with anitalian account too?
October 8th, 2008 at 1:48 am
Just installed it (Mac OS X) and the only negative thing is the rendering of the icon. Small thing, I guess, but it looks like something is broken

Great work! Indeed, is this open source? we’d all like to improve/customize it.
bug : app cannot move to secondary monitor in dual monitor configs.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:50 am
What a great little app. I’ve been looking for a RTM interface on my desktop for a while now.
I didn’t like the Active Desktop embedded web page solution.
Thank you so much!
October 8th, 2008 at 8:48 am
I second the earlier posting requesting an option for ’sticking’ RTM notifier to the desktop, rather than always on top. Would also be nice to be able to move Notifier to different positions on the Desktop.
October 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Thank you sooo much for creating this. I have been crying for this to be created for a while now. It is late though so I will play with it more tomorrow and let you know what I think.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:50 am
Me again, notifier prevents Mac OS X.5 from quitting. I have to do a force quit on the application then a shut down of the OS.
Also, one is only notified about items that are passed the due date/time; enen though in the RTM settings (site) I have the option to be informed (email) 1 hour before task is due (can you use this field to notify?).
And, the window opened for adding tasks etc., is too small and needs to be manually resized each time.
Other than that, loving it and seeing me getting much mileage from it.

Very nice. Been looking a while for this. Keyboard shortcuts would be great addittion. Thanks!!!
October 11th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
It’s nice! I like it.
I have a question. Did you built the app in Adobe Flex? If you did it in Flex could you send me the sourcecode? I’m new with Flex and I would like to learn more.
Thank you

Nice app but it doesn’t work well if you are using two screens because if you try to move it from one screen to the other it will disappear. ( Vista Enterprise, ver.0.7.48)
October 14th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Thanks! I like it.
What would make it perfect for me:
-the ability to complete a task from the notifier.
-the ability to click on the “[x] tasks due” popup reminder and open/display the notifier. (I prefer to work with my taskbar/system tray off the desktop…I currently have to restore it to click the system tray icon).
October 15th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Very nicely done.
+1 for completing tasks
+1 for not always being on top – I think it prevents my mouse from scrolling other documents while it is open.
Not sure if this was said- I would love to be able to only see 1 of my lists since I rarely care about the others while on this computer. Maybe I can choose?
Great job so far!
October 18th, 2008 at 8:04 am
I like it too.
Second the motions for the following:
– Click (double-click?) on notification box to view actual tasks.
– Ability to mark tasks complete from desktop app.
Also consider:
– Maybe have an option to see the actual tasks in the notifier popup, instead of just a count of tasks.

The link is not working. Can you fix?
December 12th, 2008 at 7:57 am
link has now been fixed, sorry about that
December 17th, 2008 at 9:58 am
still not login in on Mac

Nice app. quick, visually appealing, convenient, easy to use …. Thanks for putting it out.
Question … will you be adding the ability to add (and put in category) and complete tasks from within the tool?
These is another desktop rtm app that allows this and I’ve found it to be much nicer than having to go to the web site. I think it would be a very valuable addition.
March 9th, 2009 at 7:09 am
Thanks frank
I am looking into the new functionality of the app and will probably be adding the facilities to add / edit and complete tasks

I’ve been searching for an RTM app for quite some time now, and this one definitely shows the most promise. Great Job! I have just one problem: my tasks that are due any day after today are not showing up! Am I doing something wrong here? Any task I publish that is due today or in the past will show up, but not the future. Anyway, thanks for your work and I can’t wait for this problem to be worked out and more features added!
